A care home in Pembroke Dock has been renamed by the staff and residents who live there.
Pembroke Dock care home on Fort Road will now operate as Cartref Cleddau following feedback that it would benefit from a more meaningful name that would differentiate them from the nearby hospital.
Residents were keen to help the staff team come up with a more homely name which meant something to them and the local area.
Service manager, Sarah Lees, commented: “We are all very proud of the area we live in and as we are based very near to the Cleddau River so this was a popular choice as well as the welsh meaning for home, Cartref.
“Many of our non-welsh speaking employees have been actively learning the language in order to enhance the interactions with many of the residents here who speak welsh so it felt like the ideal time to embrace a new Welsh name.”
Since Sarah took over the reins at the home, she has worked tirelessly to ensure the care delivered there is first class and tailored to each individuals’ needs.
Just last year Sarah was presented with National award from TV and Radio personality Wynne Evans for ‘Outstanding Management contribution’.
Regional Director, Geraint Evans, commented: “As an employee-owned company it is important that staff feel they have a voice and we want them to feel involved with decision making that effects their place of work.”
The home is operated by Shaw healthcare, the largest employee-owned company in the UK and provides rehabilitation and enablement for up to 24 residents, many of whom have experienced extended periods of hospitalisation.
Shaw currently employs around 3,300 people and manages over 2,160 care beds, offering a wide range of services from elderly residential, nursing and dementia to complex care specialties.
