Age Cymru is urging older people across Wales to protect themselves with flu vaccines and Covid-19 boosters as soon as possible to help prepare for this coming winter.

The charity says immunisation is as important in later life as it is in early childhood because even as we age, we continue to benefit from routine vaccinations, especially at this time of year.

It says vaccinations are a safe and effective way of protecting older people from becoming seriously ill during winter, especially those at an increased risk of flu related complications.

Protection starts around two weeks after the vaccine and even though people may still get flu, the symptoms are likely to be milder. While the Covid-19 vaccines will help protect against the current main types of Covid-19 viruses that are currently circulating.

RSV infections can occur all year round, but just like most viruses, cases rise in autumn and winter. Again, older people can help themselves by having the vaccination when offered, but it won’t be given at the same time as the Covid-19 and flu vaccinations.

Age Cymru’s Health Initiatives Officer Angharad Phillips said: “The Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination will be offered to older people as they turn 75 on a year-round basis going forward. While people aged 65 years and older will be offered the flu vaccination and Covid-19 booster this autumn.

“We recommend you take up your GP surgery offer of a vaccination as soon as it’s offered to you. The sooner you’re vaccinated the sooner you’ll have immunity against the relevant circulating viruses.

“However, if you are already feeling unwell or have a fever, then tell the practitioner giving the vaccination before the procedure. Also seek advice from a health professional about the other routine vaccinations that are available to older people.”
