Rumours are rife that supermarket giant Aldi has earmarked a site on the edge of Tenby.

Last year, the store announced that it was on the lookout for a new store location in the Tenby area, revealing that it is looking for freehold ‘town centre’ or ‘edge of centre’ sites suitable for development in the locality.

Rumours circulating around the village of Penally, have suggested that land by Trefloyne Lane has been earmarked as a possible site (opposite the former DJs nightclub), with the site in the vicinity of Kiln Park Holiday Park - one of Haven Holidays’ premier sites in Wales.

The closest Aldi stores to the area are located in Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest.

The UK’s fifth largest supermarket has been on an expansion drive in recent years, opening around one new store a week on average to meet demand from new customers.

It says each site should be around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store, with around 100 parking spaces, ideally on a prominent main road, and with good visibility and access.

The full list of locations that Aldi stated last year it was targeting in Wales were as follows: Aberdare; Ammanford; Barry; Bridgend; Cardiff; Chepstow; Cowbridge; Lampeter; Llanelli; Llantrisant; Maesteg; Monmouth; Mumbles; Neath; Newport; Penarth; Pontardawe; Pontypool; Pontypridd; Porthcawl; Swansea; Tenby; Tonypandy; Treharris; Pwllheli; Colwyn Bay; Caernarfon; Dolgellau; Flint and Holywell.

Ciaran Aldridge, National Property Director at Aldi UK, said at the time: “We have been investing in Britain for more than 30 years now, but we know that there are still areas that either do not have an Aldi at all, or that need another store to meet customer demand.

“Shoppers are increasingly looking to get unbeatable prices on their weekly shop without compromising on quality.

“That’s why, more so than ever, we’re keen to explore all opportunities to open new stores across the country.”

Aldi’s press office have been contacted for a comment.
