The national finals of the Minute Maid Welsh Schools Cup were played last weekend at New Saints FC, Park Hall, Oswestry, and spectators enjoyed a feast of football talent.

The action-packed weekend of schools football saw eight finals played over the two days.

Greenhill School took on Treorchy Comprehensive in the final of the Girls Under 14 competition and scored a 3-1 victory to take the title of Minute Maid Welsh Schools champions.

Darcy Escott's great left-foot strike took Greenhill into the lead early on in the game with a long-range shot into the right-hand corner of the net which was without a doubt one of the best goals of the whole competition.

Later, Holly Furlong created another great chance for Greenhill to score by using her midfield support to open up Hannah Lewis to attack the 'keeper and carefully place the ball in the back of the net to take Greenhill 2-0 up.

Hannah's second goal of the game came after Maisie John, confident in her midfield position, provided Hannah another opportunity to show her skill by running rings around the Treorchy defence to bag another goal for Greenhill with another strike hitting the bottom right corner of the net and taking the lead up to 3-0.

As the final whistle blew, Greenhill without doubt were the deserved winners with a score of 3-1, as all players cheered and celebrated their Welsh title.

Each player received an individual medal and Hannah Lewis stepped up to raise the winner's cup as the presentation commenced. After a fantastic performance by the girls on the day, supporters, officials and coaches were left very impressed with the standard they played.

Sian Bennett, Greenhill's coach, commented: "A huge thank you to all players for their hard work, commitment and achievement over the past few months. I am confident that all players will go on to do well in the future and some to reach a high standard if they continue to improve the way they have over the past few months. I am very proud of all the girls and I'm sure parents, family and friends would support this as the girls hold the position of the best school U14 girls football team in the country.

"A big thank you also to all friends and families for their support and encouragement throughout the competition, especially to Mike Lewis for all his help.

"This is the first year that these girls have played as a team, which makes their achievement in winning the national finals an even greater achievement - I could not have asked any more from any of them."
