As part of this year's National Construction Week (October 8-12), pupils from Greenhill School have been given a sneak preview of their new school block which will house ICT, Special Educational Needs and Design and Technology classrooms. The event, which has been organised by ConstructionSkills in collaboration with main contractor Dawnus Construction, was held last Thursday and Friday. Year 10 pupils, who are currently studying for their BTEC First Certificate in Construction, along with pupils from the sixth form, were invited on site by contractors Dawnus Construction. After completing an initial site induction, Dawnus site manager, Andy Williams, who is also a ConstructionSkills construction ambassador, took the pupils around their new school block and explained the processes that were involved in the build. Andy said: "This event has allowed pupils to find out more about the construction industry as a whole; that it's not just the people you see working on site in hard hats and high visibility vests. Through this event we hoped to highlight that there are both professional and craft career routes in the construction industry and that there is a place for everyone." ConstructionSkills Wales education advisor, Roger Silvester, said: "By visiting their school during the construction process we wanted to show the young people that there are opportunities available to them in the construction industry which they previously may not have thought of, as well as getting a deeper insight into what is happening in their own school." In addition to learning about the history of the project and design process, pupils learnt about the actual building processes that were used in order to create the new block. They also learnt about the professional roles that are involved in building, such as architects, consultants, designers and engineers. A key requirement for this new school block was that it had to blend into the original school building, so the pupils were shown how the old and new parts of their school now fit together. Pupils also found out about the materials used and how the environmentally friendly air conditioning system works. Dawnus Construction has been working at Greenhill School since July 2006 on a new build and refurbishment programme, which has seen the completion of a new car park, extensive refurbishment of classrooms as well as the new school block, which is due to be completed by the end of October. NCW aims to highlight to young people the range of career opportunities available to them in the construction industry. ConstructionSkills latest Construction Skills Network Report demonstrates that 5,090 new construction workers are needed each year in craft, technical and management roles in Wales.
