Pembrokeshire County Council runs regular Mature Driver courses, which aim to help keep older motorists driving safely for longer.
Are you over 65 and driving regularly?
Would you like to brush up on your driving skills in a free one-day refresher course?
The courses are held at Haverfordwest Fire Station and run from 10 am to 4 pm.
Funded by Welsh Government, they consist of:
• an informal classroom-based session in the morning
• a practical driving session in the afternoon with an approved driving instructor.
Idwal David from Tenby (pictured, left) praised the course, having completed it recently.
“You’re never too old to learn and I have certainly expanded my knowledge by carrying out this course,” he said.
The theory session covers topics such as the Highway Code, junctions and roundabouts, seasonal driving, hazard awareness and road signs.
The practical session covers the aspects of driving which the participant wishes to refresh, such as parallel parking or roundabouts, plus general safer driving techniques.
Sally Jones, Road Safety Officer, said the course is not a test of driving skills, or a formal assessment of driving.
“We want to keep you mobile, independent and confident behind the wheel,” she said.
“We can also address any personal concerns you have about your driving now and for the future.”
Some of the feedback comments include: “I have re-learnt a lot of what I should have known but over the years have forgotten.”
“This really helped my confidence; everyone should do this course - thank you all.”
“I can now do Morrison’s roundabout with confidence!”
