Enthusiastic volunteers from the RNLI Saundersfoot Branch have been gathering for some beach cleaning and also to test their creativity!
Early on Sunday morning (November 17) in a couple of hours the group pulled together an eye-catching art installation using recently washed up plastics, locally collected by Julie from The Beach HeART Project.
“The fish was made up of 362 pieces of plastic and became an instant attraction for beachgoers, drawing attention from passersby amazed at the items used which included bottle tops, sports drink lids, shotgun cartridges, sun lotion pumps, straws, ice cream spoons, fishing line and rope, foam bullets, sand toys, golf tees, cider keg caps, printer ink caps, a Barbie arm, kinder eggs, a plastic carrot and even a 2007 lobster tag from Maine,” said Julie.
“We wanted to create something that would not only catch people's attention but also spark conversations about the pressing issue of ocean pollution and as we left it was great to be shown that beachgoers who had walked to Coppet and back were leaving the beach with pieces they'd found, however small.”
There's always something to get involved with as an RNLI volunteer and the next event for the seaside village is a fundraiser - a 'Fish & Chip Lunch' at the Hean on Friday, November 29, which promises attendees and volunteers an enjoyable afternoon filled with good company and delicious food.
Priced at £15 per ticket, guests will enjoy a meal of fish, chips, and peas, coupled with bottomless portions of bread and butter, completed with your choice of tea, coffee, or squash. There'll also be a fantastic raffle and table quiz.
Tickets are currently available at the RNLI’s pop-up shop open Friday to Sunday, from 11am to 4pm. Alternatively, reservations can easily be made by contacting James on 07824 320145.
