Pembrokeshire’s holiday season got away to a best-ever start with a record-breaking Whitsun weekend. Car parks were packed, beaches crowded and accommodation at a premium.

A mini crime wave swept through Tenby and the surrounding district over the Whitsun weekend - property was broken into, articles stolen and vehicles driven away, some to be found later abandoned and damaged.

Housewives from Tenby’s Knowling Mead council estate were to go to the Guildhall to present a petition to the council calling for the immediate establishment of a play park at Knowling Mead.

Immediately on hearing the announcement of the death of Senator Robert Kennedy, the Mayor of Tenby, Clr. M. B. (Harry) Eastlake sent a telegram of sympathy to the Ambassador at the United States Embassy, London.

Over 3,000 people visited Tenby Zoo at St. Catherine’s Island during the four days of the Whitsun holiday - 1,200 on the Saturday alone.

St. Mary’s Parish Church, Tenby, was to get a new curate, Rev. David Faulkner from the parish of St. Michael and All Angels, Aberystwyth.

Kilgetty’s 1868 Carnival Queen was Miss Megan Logan.

John Dinsdale created a new record for the Tenby course in the Whit Monday open medal competition with a great round of 69.
