More accustomed to performing close to home, 20 members of Saundersfoot’s Community Choir - Côr y Môr, embarked on a journey to Spain for a gig at the end of March.

Following a rehearsal on the terrace of a seaside hotel in Sitges, a charming neighbour of Barcelona, the ladies made their way to the stunning Sant Bartomeu Church, prepared to showcase their talents.

The ladies poured their hearts into performances of traditional Welsh songs such as Mae’n wlad i mi, Huna Blentyn, and Yma o hyd, and added variety with popular hits like ‘California Dreamin’ and ‘Something’.

Choir members shared readings from Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood and a poem titled ‘Welshness’ by Julie Groad, reflecting on the experience of being Welsh.

To conclude the performance and surprise the audience, the choir sang the Spanish lullaby, El Rossinyol, followed by a spirited rendition of the Welsh national anthem, which brought the crowd to their feet.

Hosted by the Welsh Catalan Cultural Association, the event received an enthusiastic response from the audience of around 200.

The ladies, recognized locally for their vibrant pink uniforms, were deeply touched by the warm reception they received during and after the concert. In fact, so enthusiastic was the welcome that they were recognised and applauded by concertgoers whilst out dining and even received applause as they entered the restaurant!

Delwen Williams, Côr y Môr’s choir leader, expressed gratitude saying: “We cannot thank the Welsh Catalan Cultural Association enough for organizing and hosting this performance, and, of course, the people of Sitges for their warm welcome! We cherished every moment of our visit and would love to return someday.”
