Following a two year break Tenby Male Choir have raised thousands of pounds this Summer for causes including the DEC Ukraine Appeal, Save the Children, Cancer Research Wales, Tenovus Cancer Care, RNLI, Penally Village and Tenby Scout and Guides Halls, as well as for St Mary's and St John's churches.

The Choir will bring their successful Summer Season to a close on September 29 with a very special Gala Concert in conjunction with Serendipity Ladies Choir.

As well as promising a varied and highly entertaining evening of music, the Concert will also mark a changing of the guard for Tenby Male Choir, who will be thanking their President Roy Noble for his constant support and encouragement, as he steps down from a position he has held since 1987, succeeding Wyn Calvin, their first President.

Writing to the Choir recently, Roy said: “It is with a heartfelt note of sadness, tinged with reality and common sense, that I have decided to relinquish my position as President of the Choir. A difficult decision, because my association goes back thirty five years.

“I have always valued and felt privileged to be your President and I thank you sincerely for those years when you were so warm and welcoming whenever my wife Elaine and I joined you.”

“Now that we are, slowly, coming out of the pandemic, I feel the Choir has a real opportunity for a new impetus and a chance for a fresh profile and standing. I’m sure a new President will provide the engine for that impetus.”

Choir Chairman, Tom Pearce said: “It was with sadness and regret that we learnt that we are to lose our president Roy Noble who has decided to step down after over 35 years of unstinting support, encouragement and enthusiasm.”

“I know I am able to speak on behalf of the whole choir when I say we look upon Roy with great affection and have so enjoyed the many eloquent stories he has related particularly at our annual dinners.

“We are very grateful for all the wonderful accolades he has bestowed upon the choir on his radio shows helping to establish our reputation as one of the best in South Wales.

“We wish both Roy and his wife Elaine well for the future and we look forward to seeing them again at our future concerts.”

Tenby Male Choir are delighted to announce that another popular broadcaster and indeed, a professional opera singer, has agreed to succeed Roy as President!

Wynne Evans, who hails from Carmarthen and is a frequent visitor to the Tenby area, presents a daily programme on BBC Radio Wales, has starred in many TV programmes and a feature film about his mother’s campaigning ‘Save the Cinema’.

He is currently most recognisable as ‘Gio Compario’, operatic star of Go Compare’s TV adverts.

Responding to the Choir’s invitation to serve as President, Wynne wrote: “I would be honoured and thrilled to take up your offer.”

Backing this up with a video message to the Choir, (in character as Gio), he said: “What an honour, what a pleasure!” before launching into a sung greeting.

Tenby Male Choir looks forward to many years of working with Wynne as the choir rebuilds in size and ambition after the challenges of the past few years.

The Gala Concert will all be held at St Mary’s Church, Tenby at the earlier than usual time of 7.30 pm on Thursday, September 29. (Doors 7 pm). Admission is £10 on the door.
