Holocaust Memorial Day

Friday, January 27 is International Holocaust Memorial Day, marking the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland on the same day in 1945. On this annual day of commemoration, the United Nations urges everyone to honour the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism, and to help to ensure that there are no more genocides.

Fairtrade Friday

Friday is also Fairtrade Friday, the last Friday of each month, when the Fairtrade Foundation brings attention to the farmers and workers around the world who grow the food we eat and make the clothes we wear. Fairtrade Fortnight is coming up at the beginning of March and as part of working towards becoming a fairtrade town, a directory of all the places in Tenby, businesses and community groups, who use or sell fairtrade products is being drawn up. If you would like to be in this directory, please contact [email protected] or pop in to the Town Council office in the De Valence with your details.

Tenby Arts Club

On Friday night, January 27, Tenby Arts Club is pleased to present the Lucky 12, Duncan and Rebecca Whitehurst, who will be performing in St Johns Church Hall at 7pm. Everyone is welcome, and the small entrance fee includes tea/coffee and biscuits after the performance.

Next Friday. February 3, there will be a talk by Tomos Jones on ‘The Archaeology of Pembrokeshire’, also in St Johns Church Hall at 7pm.

Craft with a Heart

On Saturday, January 28, from 2-4pm, there will be an informal craft session in Augustus Place Community Hall. You can bring along your own craft to do or share, or have a go at a new craft. The theme this time is ‘craft with a heart’, so you could have a go at something romantic if you wish, or craft a green heart to show your love for this beautiful planet of ours, or do something completely different. No skills or experience required, just come along for tea and a chat and try something! Donations will be collected to cover rent and materials.

The Big Garden Birdwatch

This weekend, January 27 to 29, it is time to do the Big Garden Birdwatch. You can find details on www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/ . Big Garden Birdwatch is fun, free and for everyone. And you don’t need a garden to take part! Counting the birds you see during an hour from your balcony, or while sat in your local park will play a vital role in helping us understand how UK birds are doing. By taking part in Big Garden Birdwatch you, and hundreds of thousands of other like-minded nature lovers, will be taking action to protect our birds for generations to come. And besides, it’s great fun! If you would like a printout of the form to send in, pop in to Tenby Town Council office in the De Valence for one.

Tenby Petanque Pitch

Funding for this has been received from the Outdoor Connections Fund, and will be going on a strip of land between the footpath and the wall in Battery Gardens. This will mean that a petanque (or boules) club can be set up – there is a Welsh Petanque Association. It will also mean everyone will be able to have a game of boules there whenever they like, and it is quite an accessible location.

Cookery Demonstrations

These are happening every Friday until the end of March from 12 till 2pm in Augustus Place Community Hall. Healthy budget cooking with air fryers, microwaves and slow cookers will be demonstrated every week. You can go to one or all of them, everyone is welcome.

Warm Spaces

Tenby’s Warm Spaces are continuing in St Johns Church Hall, Deer Park Church Hall, St Mary’s Church House, the Salvation Army, Augustus Place and the Old Chapel with a friendly welcome and a variety of activities and refreshments available. Please encourage everyone you know to make use of them - stay connected and stay warm!
