Stepaside CP recently participated in Kilgetty AFC Centenary celebrations, taking part in the Kilgetty AFC Centenary Design A Poster Competition.
An assembly was led by Kilgetty AFC Secretary and Girl’s Coach, Sharron Hardwick, who shared some of the club's 100-year history.
Pupils were excited to learn and see photographs of the players from a hundred years ago, including one of the most successful Kilgetty AFC players, George Edwards.
Before 1939 Edwards attended Swansea University, joining Swansea Town, gaining his first cap as a Welsh Amateur International. During the Second World War Edwards was stationed in the Midlands with the RAF and played for Coventry City as an amateur. After the war, he attended Birmingham University. When Coventry manager Harry Storer moved to Birmingham City he signed Edwards as a professional.
In December 1948 Edwards transferred to Cardiff City for a then-substantial fee of £12,000. He became part of the 1951/52 side that achieved promotion to the original First Division, making 222 League and Cup appearances for Cardiff, scoring 46 goals, playing until he was 35, in 1955. Edwards earned 12 Wales International senior peacetime caps. Throughout all of this, Edwards travelled back to Kilgetty when he could, to play for Kilgetty AFC. The school agreed that George Edwards is a true Kilgetty AFC footballing hero!
Another Kilgetty footballing hero the children were particularly excited to discuss was the Kilgetty Messi, Liam Cullen. The children felt proud that Liam attended their school and played for Kilgetty AFC. They looked on in awe at the slides showing Liam’s achievements at Swansea City, and making his Wales debut last year.
The children found a further connection between Stepaside CP School and Kilgetty AFC through slides of games being played at the original Kilgetty AFC playing field, which was situated at the current Stepaside School site.
Pupils from classes 2 to 6 showed their learning in incredibly creative ways as they designed Kilgetty AFC Centenary Posters. Over 50 posters were submitted to the Kilgetty AFC Committee, who were very impressed with the fantastic entries. Two winners were selected from each class.
Pupils watched a recorded video of Liam Cullen and his mother, Louise, looking at the posters and selecting their favourite. Liam sent a message to the whole school congratulating them on their efforts. Kilgetty AFC women also chose their winning poster.
The Fair Trade In Football Campaign donated prizes of Fairtrade chocolates and certificates, presenting these to every child who participated.
Stepaside CP posters will be displayed in Kilgetty Village shops the week of the Kilgetty Fete, from August 24. They will also be displayed at Kingsmoor Sports Club on September 1 in the Kilgetty AFC Centenary Display.
