Following a long illness, Gwenda Whitehurst passed away peacefully at Park House Tenby Ward on April 16, 2024.
Gwenda was the daughter of Tom and Gwen Llewelyn and was born in Rhydfelin in February 1940. She had four brothers and sisters - Trefor, Evan, Janet and Jocelyn. She attended Pontypridd Grammar School before working as a secretary in Cardiff. She married her husband David Whitehurst, a radar engineer in the RAF, in 1963 and moved to Tenby in 1965 when David was stationed at Manorbier.
Gwenda worked as a teaching assistant at Tenby Infants School for a number of years, after which she became well-known as a receptionist at Tenby Surgery, where she worked for 25 years until retirement.
A lifelong keen gardener, Gwenda was always available for sage advice. Indeed, she could often be seen talking to friends and fellow gardeners about her favourite subject over the garden wall outside her home on the Green.
She is survived by her children Duncan and Lucy, as well as grandchildren Lily, Harry, Stella and Lenny. In accordance with her wishes, Gwenda's funeral was a modest affair, attended by close family and friends at Narberth Crematorium. The service, conducted by her daughter Lucy, included a heartfelt tribute by her brother-in-law, John Evans and a musical performance by Duncan, Rebecca, Lily and Harry.
There were family flowers only with donations to Paul Sartori c/o Rossiters Funeral Directors, Tenby.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the outpouring of good wishes and support during this difficult time.
