‘Behind the Hedgerows’ is the title of the next monthly talk organised by the Pembrokeshire Historical Society. Presented by aviation historian John Evans, it will take the form of a photographic tour of the many air stations in Pembrokeshire.
John’s talk will span the decades, starting with World War I at Fishguard and Milton. It will move on to RAF Pembroke Dock, which opened in the 1930s, and then look at the county’s numerous World War II airfields, many of which are now little more than overgrown concrete runways and clusters of tumbledown buildings. Also covered will be the Royal Navy and the RAF at Brawdy, together with Haverfordwest Airport.
A well-known and popular speaker, John has lifelong interest in aviation and helped set up the Pembrokeshire Aviation Group in 1984, which is still going strong. He has been involved in various heritage projects in Pembroke Dock, beginning with the Gun Tower Museum, then setting up the Flying Boat Centre and for the past ten years the town’s Heritage Centre.
The talk will take place at the Archives building in Prendergast, Haverfordwest on Friday, April 5, starting at 2.30pm. All are welcome.
