Concealed by the steep contours of converging coastal valleys, Colby is a garden of contrasts, with a hidden industrial heritage overlain by a luxuriant and diverse mixture of native and exotic plants and energised with a sense of freedom and escape from the modern world.
There is no doubt that Colby has to be one of the most perfect examples of a place where you can get outside and closer to nature. It recently came top in the National Trust Garden category, scoring the highest garden visitor experience rating across the whole of the Trust.
So if you are looking for new challenges and experiences in 2015, then volunteering at Colby might be just the ticket! Colby finds challenging projects for all kinds of volunteer groups, from scouts and school groups to working holidays. Last summer, a massive 49 personnel from the county's 14th Signal Regiment worked with staff and volunteers over two days to help renovate, clear ground, improve access, construct a watercourse and restore buildings at National Trust's Little Craig-y-Borion Farm. Eventually this farm will be developed into a centre where volunteers from all over the world can stay when volunteering in Pembrokeshire.
"Whether you want to improve your CV, make friends, or just want to give something back, making the move to volunteer could be the best decision you ever make," said a spokesperson. "Colby is always looking for volunteers to help manage the woodland garden, the vast acreage of the estate, National Trust cottages and the walled garden is an enchanting gem of a place to volunteer in.
"We need maintenance volunteers, and volunteers to support our events and activities too. Colby is indebted to its present team of volunteers, so why not come along and give them a hand and know that you are supporting a good and cause."
