A CROSS TRAINING ALTERNATIVE: PILATES
The Pilates method is a total body conditioning programme utilising spring driven machines, as well as a series of floor exercises to increase strength, coordination, control, flexibility, stamina and concentration. This exercise method was developed early last century by the German-born Joseph Pilates.
This unique form of exercise focuses on creating a strong ‘centre’ via the appropriate use of the abdominal muscles as stabilisers. Breathing and abdominal support are emphasised in every movement sequence such that their stabilising role can be integrated into the performance of everyday movements. Once this core control is achieved, the limbs are free to do anything. In this way Pilates provides for greater body awareness.
Due to the precise approach of Pilates exercise, it is recommended to work with a qualified Pilates instructor.
