Caldey Island has taken delivery of a new crane. The mobile 22-tonne French-made crane has come from Chester and was successfully transported to the monastic isle military style with help from the Royal Marines. The Royal Marines, based at Instow, Devon, used the operation as an exercise and conveyed the crane from Castle Beach via a landing craft utility to the island last Wednesday evening. "It was an eventful journey getting the crane to Caldey, but we are all pleased it has taken place," said Ben Childs, island estate manager. "It will help our infrastructure which is essential to keep the wheels moving," he continued. "A huge thank you goes to everyone involved, including the Royal Marines, Andew Aldred, who kindly kept the crane at his farm in St. Clears, and, of course, the islanders who assisted in getting it off the deep soft sand by Dolbys gap on Priory Beach."
