There was a wealth of classic motorcyles on display in Tenby Harbour on Saturday, with local actor, town councillor and bike enthusiast Charles Dale guest of honour to wave riders off on their tour
The Caldey Classic Motorcycle Run (organised by Huw and Mary Adams, and now in its thitd year) started from the Harbour area with kind permission of the harbourmaster Chris Salisbury.
Chris Was unfortunately at a wedding on the day so his able assistant Jack Oliver was in chargeof the event which comes under the umbrella of the Pembrokeshire Motorcycle Club under the auspices of the British Motorcycling Federation (BMF).
Despite the weather forecast of sunshine and showers the motorcyclists missed the localised rain that took place throughout Pembrokeshire.
Motorcyclists had travelled from Bridgend in the East to Aberaeron in the West, and the Bikes ranged from a 1925 BSA to the modern motorcyclists of the marshalls.
Charles Dale - famous for his acting roles in Coronation Street, Casualty and The Pembrokeshire Murders (and currently in BBC’s Sherwood), who can be now seen sat behind the counter of Dale’s Music Store on Tenby High Street most days, flagged off the 60 bikes entered in the event.
Charles caused quite a stir on the harbour with event participants and spectators with his modern electric motorcycle.
At the event briefing Huw and Mary congratulated Charles on his appointment to Tenby Town Council and they said how delighted they were to have him attend the event and flag away the bikes from Tenby Harbour.
The route left Tenby via Manorbier and the coastal road past the Dak onto Hodgeston to Pembroke via Lamphey and then on to Angle Bay for a coffee stop.
Marshalls reported that everyone was enjoying the view so much they didn’t want to leave, but they then set off via Freshwater West towards Carew, Crosshands, through Canaston Woods to Blackpool Mill.
They then crossed the main road to Llawhaden and took the lovely turning over the bridge at Llawhaden Church., before heading to Clynderwen, Llanfallteg, Henllan Amgoed to Whitland.
In Whitland they took the Tavernspite Road turned left through Ciffig and then to Llanddowror to the Old Mill Café for lunch, where Matt and Kim provided hospitality and refreshments.
After lunch participants took the scenic route via Marros, Amroth, Wisemans Bridge and Saunderfoot returning to Tenby at approximately 4 pm with Tenby at its best with the tide in and the sun shining!
“It was fantastic to see locals and tourists enjoying the spectacle of such a range of classic and vintage motorcycles,” said organiser Mary.
“Some said it took them back to their youth seeing bikes they had owned back in the day.
Mary and Huw would like to give a special thank you to the fantastic team of volunteers who helped them organise the event, including their son and daughter James and Hayley.
Special mentions also go to Nigel Hodson from Peter Francis Auctioneers who sponsored the rider numbers and Ken of Ken Morgan Architects who sponsored the photocopying of the routes.
Ken Roberts, membership secretary of the Pembrokeshire Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club said: “Thanks to Huw Mary and family for organising another successful Caldey Classic.”
