Local boatmen and water organisations have come on board to help ensure the success and safety of this month's Caldey Swim. Taking place on the afternoon of Sunday, August 31, the swim to the mainland looks set to raise several thousand pounds for the RNLI thanks to the sponsorship of the 100 swimmers taking part. Now in its second year, under the umbrella of the Tenby Sea Swimming Association, which also stages the town's Boxing Day Swim, the Caldey Swim is already gaining an iconic status as possibly the most stunning sea swim in the UK, and this year's entry has seen double the numbers of the pilot event in 2013. "It's also a very challenging - although do-able - 2.5 mile course, so our safety cover is paramount," said TSSA chairman Chris Osborne. "That's why we are so grateful for the co-operation of our coastguard team, Tenby Sailing Club, Saundersfoot Sailing Club, Pembroke Paddlers, Tenby Watersports, Tenby Surf Lifesaving Club, Merlin First Aid, and Bourne Leisure, as well as the skippers of our 'mother ship', Graham Waring, and supporters' boat, Wayne 'Harpo' Allen." Graham, at the helm of Nemesis, will be ferrying the swimmers over to the island in readiness for the swim's 3 pm start on August 31 before taking on the role of lead support craft for the return crossing. Meanwhile, Harpo has made his Polar Star available to take any spectators who would like to view the excitement of the swim from the water. Places on the supporters boat are £10, to reserve contact Val Coates Rees on (01834) 843951 or [email protected]">[email protected] The Caldey Swim is sponsored by Princes Gate Water, Big Brum's, Milford Haven Port Authority and Skycam Wales.
