There was another large turnout of volunteers for the Kilgetty Begelly ‘Big Community Clean Up’ event held last Sunday.

Thirty-four people registered to take part in the morning’s litter pick around the two villages, including some of the 1st Kilgetty Cubs and Scout group together with leaders and parents. The weather was excellent, cold but dry in the morning, and resulted in 25 bags of litter being collected.

All those who took part in the litter pick then enjoyed some hot soup with bread and home-made cakes which everyone certainly enjoyed. Thanks must go to Gavin and Graham for the soups and Wendy who made the cakes. All were excellent and greatly appreciated

Commenting on the event, Marc Bond, Pembrokeshire County Council’s eco champion, said: “I am so pleased to see such support from the community and the level of interest shown both in the recycling initiatives and the ongoing environment projects being proposed.

“There has been a wonderful turnout today and a huge amount of community spirit. Kilgetty Begelly is a pioneer in the Street Clean operation and I’ll be keeping a close eye on its success. Well done to everyone who has contributed to a very successful day.”

Adding to Marc’s comments, County Clr. David Pugh said: “On behalf of the Kilgetty Begelly Rural Futures Environment Group, I would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who turned out to help with the litter pick and to those who assisted in providing the much-needed refreshments during the day.

“It really was a great community event and I hope the proposed environment projects will also get the community support shown at this event.”

A number of environmental projects are now underway and preparations for a tree planting scheme are well advanced.

Other projects include - ecological and biodiversity surveys, obtaining ‘bee friendly’ status for the villages, building bug hotels, bird boxes, creating wild flower areas and looking at enhancing access to the common.

Support for these projects has been forthcoming from several organisations and grant funding opportunities are being explored.
