A Pembrokeshire animal rescue charity has said it is truly shocked after a total of 15 abandoned guinea pigs were found across the county over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Greenacres Rescue centre based in Haverfordwest took to social media on Sunday to state: Many animal lovers will have seen Fenton Vets Haverfordwest and our post about the abandoned guinea pigs yesterday in various places around Pembrokeshire, sadly as the day went on more and more transpired - we are truly shocked!
“A total of twelve little guinea pigs have been found and brought to us and another three being kept by the finder totalling at least 15 guinea pigs abandoned around the County!
“The Police have been involved and actually brought the last ones to be found into the vets care and then onto us, they are now collecting evidence to see if the person(s) responsible can be located.
“We understand that sometimes situations mean you are unable to keep animals but as pet owners we are all duty bound by the Animal Welfare Act to provide adequate care as long as they are in our ownership and abandonment is a criminal offence.
“We are concerned that there maybe other boxes of Guinea Pigs at other locations that have yet to be found and with temperatures rising, it’s a real worry how they will survive without adequate water and food.
“If you see any boxes or containers, please investigate. If any are found please contact us immediately and we will help and collate information to be given to the police.”
Thankfully, Greenacres reported that all guinea pigs are safe, and all have been vet checked and treated for parasites.
“Unfortunately we do not know if they have mixed so will have to wait to ensure the females are not pregnant,” explained Greenacres.
“None are available for homing just yet but will be advertised when ready.
Many Thanks for all the emails and messages wishing them well and huge thank you to those that have found them and brought them to the vets.
Your support means we can be there for such cases,” they added, stating that if anyone happens to find anymore, to please contact the Centre on 01437781745 or email: [email protected]
