Time is running out for households across Pembrokeshire to collect a tree, free of charge, from one of 52 distribution hubs across Wales before Christmas.

With Christmas shopping season in full swing, the My Tree Our Forest initiative, gives every household in Wales a free tree which will last for generations- unlike most presents gifted on the big day.

Launched by the Welsh Government, people will be given a tree to plant at home, or have planted on their behalf, to tackle the climate and nature emergencies.

Collections at local hubs runs until Sunday, December 18, but that won’t be the final opportunity to pick up a tree.

Hubs, which have been facilitated by Coed Cadw, the Woodland Trust in Wales, will reopen in mid-February for several weeks giving those who weren’t able to collect their tree this side of Christmas another chance to help fight climate change.

Dedicated volunteers are on site at the hubs ready to share expert growing advice and help people choose the right tree for the right space. Ten different species of 295,000 native and broadleaf trees are available to choose from.

These are - Hazel; Rowan; Hawthorn; Silver Birch; Crab Apple; Sessile Oak; Dogwood; Dog Rose; Field Maple; and Elder.

Hubs are running in Pembrokeshire at Folly Farm, Begelly, Kilgetty.

As well as sucking carbon from the air, improving our mental health and cleaning the air we breathe, broadleaf trees are a haven for birds and wildlife.

Natalie Buttriss, Director of Coed Cadw said: “While lots of us are thinking about a different kind of tree at this time of year, we’ve got ten native species to give away that will fight the effects of climate change for generations to come.

“We hope to inspire people from all backgrounds, regions and walks of life to get involved, and as a result, feel more connected to the multiple benefits that trees can bring – for life, and not just for Christmas.”

For those unable to attend a hub to collect a tree, one can be ordered online and delivered to their door.

Alternatively, a tree can be planted on their behalf, helping to grow a National Forest for Wales, home by home.
