The fire service have issued a warning on electrical safety, after firefighters responded to a tumble dryer fire that was caused by the use of a block adapter at a home in Milford Haven.
At 5.52pm on Wednesday, April 9, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Milford Haven Fire Station responded to an incident at a domestical property in Steynton.
Crews responded to a tumble dryer fire that was caused by the use of a block adapter.
Luckily, on this occasion the occupiers were in their home at the time of the incident, otherwise it could have been a story with a very different ending.
Crews left the scene at 6.15pm.
Following this incident, MAWWFRS is issued a reminder on electrical safety, tumble dryer and white goods safety, as follows:
- Most households use extension leads or adaptors to increase the number of appliances that can be plugged into a wall socket. It is important that these devices are fused to minimise the risk of overheating and potential fire hazards.
- While extension leads allow more appliances to be connected, this does not always mean it is safe to do so. Different electrical appliances consume varying amounts of power. To reduce the risk of overheating and fire, never plug in appliances that together exceed 13 amps or 3000 watts of energy.
- NEVER leave appliances unattended - don’t turn your tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed. Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast-moving parts that get very hot.
- Don’t overload your tumble dryer or put in items that have been used to soak up flammable liquids including cooking oil.
- Don’t ignore warning signs - if you can smell burning or have clothes that feel hotter at the end of the cycle, have your appliance checked by a professional.
